About Us

Our league was established in October 2003.  Originally our games were on Monday nights at Evergreen park, due to park scheduling they offered us Friday nights at 8 and 9 pm, which worked out for everyone since many women work and it gave them more time to unwind after work or school and then head out to the game.  We have had Friday nights since January 2004.

The reason why we created our league was because we needed a just and fair space for all kinds of women to collectively get together in an organized manner and play basketball.  At the time that we created our league there was really nothing in the East Los Angeles area that allowed women to play organized basketball in a fair league.

We do charge a league fee, and we do not make a profit off of the the league fee.  It is merely a redistribution of funds.  We do however collect the fee up front so that we are not dealing with collecting referee fees at each game.  This fee is collected at the beginning of each season.  The fee covers the following:  rental of the gym, referees, scorekeeper and book keeper.  Each season varies as it depends on how many teams participate.  We recently purchased the score machine which was about $2000.00.  We did this because the park was going to charge us and additional $20.00 to rent the park machine.  Quite often the park machine was not working properly so we decided to save ourselves some money and we bought our own machine which we use for both days to keep the score.  Which brings us to the sale of the t-shirts.  We are selling the t-shirts to raise the money to pay for the machine.  Currently the t-shirt sizes that we have are large and extra large and are only $12.00.  All the proceeds go to the cost of the machine.

We do not give the winners awards or trophies.  Instead we host an all-star game and invite both Friday and Sunday league participants.  The all-star team players are voted in by their team mates.  We also have an all around shoot around and a 3 point shoot around, these participants are also voted for by their team mates.

Many of the women that play in our league are diverse.  We have Chicanas, Mexicanas, Chinese, Filipina, Central American, African American, etc.  We also have lesbian, straight, single, married women that play in our league.  Our league is queer friendly!! One of the many beautiful elements of our league is that since we are community based many of the women are from the Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles area.  Although we do have women who travel from Diamond Bar, Long Beach, Riverside, La Puente, Montebello, Korea Town, Lincoln Heights, El Sereno, Alhambra, Altadena, and several other parts of Los Angeles!!

One of our teams is a group of women that played high school basketball together and here they are a few years (just kidding) later playing basketball together!!

We also have very loyal spectators who are there every Friday to watch the women play, some of them have even coached some of the women in their adolescent years!

The children and husbands or partners also watch their Mujeres play.  It is a such a beautiful sight to see so many women take part in this role as competitive basket ball player.  This is their time to rid themselves of their daily stresses of the week and relax!!
